The early chick embryo lacks a mature immune system and can therefore be used to study anti-angiogenic or angiogenic activity of test substances when placed onto the CAM. This is useful for an evaluation of compounds to inhibit tumor induction of angiogenesis. The blood vessel spikes are then counted under the microscope, thus showing the effects of the compound.
