Matrigel provides a more natural environment to initiate an angiogenic response. It assesses the ability of a compound to form angiogenic tubes matrices in Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVEC) which are seeded on a Matrigel basement membrane. After 10 days, the matrigel plugs are removed and angiogenesis is quantified histologically or morphometrically in plug sections. Different cells can be used in the Matrigel. It can be used to study anti-angiogenic or angiogenic activity.
